...finished...

So, last night I posted a little sneak peek of something I was working on...well, it's done.

I had wanted to make a painted rug for a while, and last week I finally dragged my bottom to IKEA and bought the soon-to-be-painted victim  volunteer rug.

Here it is straight off the showroom floor (in all it's $9.99 glory)...

...fine rug on it's own, but not what I wanted...

And here is my inspiration...

This rug is going in my kitchen, so I wanted something kind of "food-ish" on it...I thought about French words and stuff, but when I saw this photo, I sort of changed direction...

I had to prime the rug (twice)...then I painted it with Martha Stewart's Gull in Eggshell (twice)...holy crow, I thought the paint would never cover that pattern...

I cut big 'ol stencils from my Silhouette (who has yet to be named...I'm leaning towards Mable or Frances...don't those sound like totally dependable work-horse names??? Please please please forgive me if your name is Mable or Frances...), placed them on the rug and went to work with some Martha Stewart Lagoon in Eggshell (I love the red in the original photo, but I think the Lagoon worked better in my kitchen)...

Here it is (almost done!)...

Then I introduced the sandpaper to "STAR" and we got this...just what I was looking for...old & worn looking, instantly...

And a few more photos, up close...

I love it.
And I have to think the rug must be happier this way, too...

I love it to! It looks really cute, love how you used words instead of a design.

i have this same rug, only mine is very uninspired looking...it merely serves to remove some of the perpetual dirt from the bottoms of my kidlet's feet...you did a fabulous job personalizing yours!

wow, lovely job. Does the paint make it feel stiff or does the sanding down soften it up some?

I really love this. I have not found a rug I like for my kitchen. This is a great way to get a custom look. Did you have to seal it at all on top?
