What happens when a yucky old cork board meets some crown moulding, rosettes, a coat of paint and a paper window shade? This, baby...

Meet our subject...the 1980's, everyone-and-their-brother-had-one-of-these-in-his/her-room-and-had-all-of-his/her-Field Day ribbons-and-Senior Class pictures-pinned-to-them-with-plastic-pushpins cork board...just fine on it's own...but, just fine doesn't work here...

...hey handsome...you're about to get some jazzin' up...

Now meet our team of professionals...

...4 rosettes from Home Depot, .99 cents each...

The 8' strip of crown moulding failed to show up for photos, but he was cheap too, only $4.99...
...I got this stuff from Goodwill for $1.99...it's from IKEA, but I'm not exactly sure what it is...I think it's a paper window shade...it's super-flexible and paper-y...and it's the coolest super-dark shade of brown and it's texture-y...oh, and it smells sort-of like dirt...
...here's a close-up...any suggestions? Whatever it is, it's very loooong...118" to be exact...

I took those four little rosettes and glued 'em to the corners of the board using wood glue. I clamped them down for about an hour and then let them dry overnight...(I didn't say it was a fast process...)

Then my main man gave me a lesson on how to saw...yep...there's a right way and a wrong way. I knew only the wrong way...until now...and I gotta tell ya, the right way is sooooo much easier...

I measured the spaces between my rosettes and cut the moulding to fit in between...then I glued and clamped the trim and let that dry for a few hours...

Now, because I'm not a master carpenter (...yet...), there were some (small) gaps between the trim and the rosettes and I didn't really like the way it looked. So, at this point, I took out the spackling and filled all the little spaces.

When the spackling dried I took the board outside and painted the entire thing with 2 coats of white spray paint.

After the paint was dry, I cut the IKEA paper stuff to the right size, sprayed the back with adhesive and patted it into place over the old cork.

The paper-meets-trim edge didn't look sharp enough for me so I painted some old beaded trim I had (.99 cents/yard at JoAnn) with the white spray paint and I hot glued that around the inside edges of the cork...

Oh, yeah.

Much better...

You're welcome, cork board...you owe me one.
