...{inspired} baby girl gift...

8.30.2011
Last week some friends of ours gave birth to their third child...in a really incredible way.

Zoe went into labor at 1:00 am...and gave birth to little Ava Anne at 2:10 am...at home...in their bed...Tom delivered the baby...one push. Yep, one push. Seriously...my birth stories can't hold a candle to this...and truthfully, that's OK with me...give me an epidural and a team of professionals every time (no offense, honey...I'm sure you would have been wonderful at birthin' our babies...).

So that's the back story...not really relevant to today's project, except that Ava is the recipient of said project...
I just think it's crazy...and cool...thank you for indulging me...

Here's the gift I made for that sweet little new life...

I did a quick search on Pinterest for "baby girl gifts" and when I saw these photos, I knew I had found what I wanted to make...

But I wanted to change them up a bit...so I also took some inspiration from this embroidered tag from Amy Tangerine...

And here's what I used...

*A shadow box I bought probably 10 years ago and never could find a use for...
*some scrap paper...
*my favorite Martha Stewart butterfly punch...
*cardstock...
*some embroidery floss & a needle...

OK...now here's where I have to make a disclaimer...I am not a great embroider-er...in fact, I'm a pretty terrible one...but I really like the look of embroidery and I like the actual act of embroidering, so I did some on this little gift.

Here's how it went:

I just wrote Ava's name on a piece of cardstock...

...embroidered directly over the writing...and then went back and erased any visible pencil marks.

It's not fantastic...but I like it...and, it really does look better in real life...really, truly...it does...stop smirking...

Then I marked the places that I wanted the little butterflies to go (again with pencil...erasing the visible marks after the butterflies were glued in place)...

I punched one little butterfly out of kraft paper & wrote Ava's birthday on it...then I secured that butterfly to the shadowbox backing with one of the little pearl-topped pins that came with the box.

I really like the way this little gift turned out...crazy embroidery and all...are you smirking again???
