gardening 101...I NEED YOUR HELP!

OK...I've been diligently working on my little garden...and I must admit...I stink at this...I really, truly do have a brown thumb...

Here are my "strawberries" - or sticks, as I like to call them...I bought the kit (with those little strawberry "bulbs" I think they were called) at Menards and followed the directions exactly (I think...) - this is what they've looked like since I planted them almost 3 weeks ago. WHAT HAVE I DONE WRONG??? Any help you may have would be greatly appreciated...even if it's just "give it up, girl...they sell strawberries at the grocery store..."

I'm keeping them watered, but not too watered...only doing it when the soil is dry...and I put them in the sun all day...and they're just...ewwwww.

So whaddaya think?

Thank you! Love you guys...

  1. I can't keep plants alive to save my life. It's honorable that you're trying to grow your own food, but girl, they have them at the grocery store. ;)

  2. I actually have good luck with strawberries. :) I tried the bulb/sticks things, too but no luck. I just buy the strawberry plants at Walmart or Lowes. Just plant them in the ground or pot (they like the ground better), & they'll grow like crazy. They'll last through the winter & come back in the spring each year. I've used them like ground cover in my front flower beds before. They'll have runners everywhere. At our house now we made a raised bed in the backyard for the strawberries & they are doing great. I don't even water them that much! You can do it! Good luck. :)

  6. Hmm... Do they have enough space to grow? I don't know about strawberry bulbs... but most other bulbs need a pretty deep/wide space to be able to take root.

  7. I bought those too. They took weeks before little leaves started to appear. I assume they were doing things underground. So my advice is give them more time. I planted eight about 4 or 5 weeks ago. So far only 3 of them have leaves, but one of them just had leaves appear a few days ago, so I'm still holding out hope for the rest. I've never done this before, so I don't know if they'll actually grow or not... if they don't start growing soon I'll probably buy a couple of plants, too.

  8. Did these ever grow for you? I just bought these too at Menards and came across your blog from a search of "strawberry plants from menards" :) I don't think they look very promising but was curious to know if yours ever worked out or if I should just throw in the towel now.. haha

I bought an already growing plant from Kmart and that gave me two tiny little berries and now nothing...I stink at this...;)

  10. Hi Maggie,
That is too funny! I should probably just use that white pot to plant some pretty flowers or something, but I also suck at this stuff! I am trying to grow tomatoes for the first time too.. We shall see:)
