diy countdown board...

This project was featured...

WhisperWood Cottage

A few days ago I was over at Susie Harris' blog (awesome...go check it out) and saw this fantastic idea for a countdown board that she had made. I knew I needed to make one...

We countdown everything around here...days until Friday, days until holidays, days until birthdays, days until garbage day (no...seriously...we usually have so much trash we have to make sure we can fit it all in the bin...;)). Sooooo, here's what I came up with:

It's a little different than Susie's...well, it's actually really different. But I like the final product...hope you do, too!

*So this is what I started with...
I had this old "art" piece that I snagged from Marshall's on clearance - it was like $.50 or something - it was terribly ugly, but how could I not buy it at just 50 cents?!?!?!
In this photo I have already started to tear the printed paper off of the front.

*I started to get impatient, so I stopped trying to remove all of the paper (you'll see why it really doesn't matter in a minute). Then I spraypainted the whole piece with a matte black paint. After 3 coats of paint (I'm not that great at spraypainting, obviously...) I sealed the piece with a gloss sealer just to remove that chalky paint feeling and to give it a little shine.

*When the piece was completely dry (I think I waited a few hours), I took a couple of these super-cool adhesive chalkboard sheets I found at Michaels ($1.99 for 3!) and stuck them to the front of the board. My space was about 12x12 and the sheets were only 8 1/2 by 11, so I ended up cutting a little off two of the sheets and having a seam in the middle of the board...

*Then I sat down with my Silhouette and cut the words "days until" and the two brackets out of vinyl...applied them to the front of the piece and, voila!

*I really like the way it turned out...but I did come to realize I can't write on a chalkboard...nope, not at all. I think I tried writing the "34" and "spring" about 6 times each and they still look funny to me...maybe the number/event changing can be Kate's new job...

my next big project...

I've been collecting little pieces of inspiration for ever...recipes, color boards, decorating ideas, websites to visit, you name it...but, because I don't have everything in one place, I forget what I've got...

Sooooo, it's time to put together an inspiration journal...

Here's what I'm starting with:

Let's see what it can become...

How are you inspired? Do you have an art journal?

I made this layout of Ty with the new kit I received yesterday from the Little Black Dress kit club...oh, how it makes me long for spring...(insert dramatic gaze out the window at all the snow).
Only 40 days left...;)

Snow-mageddon 2011...the aftermath...

We've made it through what the meteorologists were expecting to be the greatest blizzard in recorded history (in the Chicago area). Well, it turned out that it was the 3rd greatest blizzard (what a mediocre finish...) - and now it's over...and now it's cooooold.

But we did get some fun snow-playin' time in before the temp dropped...

I was actually standing eye-to-eye with my son when I took this photo...the snow drifts in our driveway were that high...

Here's Kate hauling snow from the neighbors' houses over to ours, because we just don't have enough...hmmm...

Some SERIOUS adorability (?) here...

Yes, yes, I know...adorability is not a word. But, if it were...

February? Already? and some baking...

Wow! Where has the time gone??? We've been through Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Eve and here we are just 2 weeks from Valentine's Day! What the hay hay??? I have all of these little projects floating around in my head...I guess I'd better get on the ball! I've been taking some time off to get rooms repainted (Martha Stewart Tobacco Leaf rocks...) and DH is working diligently on our bathroom remodel...10 months and counting...;)

But yesterday, even with all of the other stuff that needs to get done, I decided I wanted to do a little baking. Usually I get this idea on the weekend when the kids are home from school, and as soon as I open my mouth I have 3 little "helpers" just DYING to assist me...ugh. Now, don't get me wrong...I love having the kids working in the kitchen with me.

And by "love," I mean like...

Sorta.

I have these grand fantasies of us all working together (sans fighting, crying, etc.) to create a masterpiece fit for any episode of Cake Boss...but what usually happens is quite the opposite...

So yesterday I decided to bake on my own...I wanted to decorate on my own...I wanted to lick the bowl - on my own.

So that's just what I did. With 2 kids off at school (and not returning for hours...hee hee hee) and my little guy tucked away warm and safe in his bed for a nap, I made brownies. And I decorated them (well, some of them...by the time I was halfway through with them the kids got home from school and the baby woke up). Then my assistants took over...

Not quite the masterpieces I usually envision, but delicious nonetheless.
